I'm also recently have the needs to examine and playing with these great things,
Actually, one would use freetype + xft/fontconfig + pango, as long as you're using
Xfree-4.2.
Anyway, for your question, you may want to take a look the source of gedit2 or the
testtext program, one of the test program inside gtk+2 sources. For the gedit2 source,
the font related functions are quite few and well orgainzed, it would give you a good
start. And the testtext program is much more complicated, as it want to shows to a lot..
but you can get a look from it too.
