I am looking for a function that takes e.g. a pointer to the popup-menu in

I haven't actually tried this, but shouldn't
gtk_widget_hide(GTK_WIDGET(menuitem));
do the trick? Of course you'd need to save the menuitem widget pointers
somewhere on menu creation, or find them again later on.
cheers
