character to bitmap conversion...

Hi folks,

I'm not quite sure I know what I'm asking here but hopefully someone will 
understand...

I am writing an application where I need to do a conversion from a
character to a bitmap (or pixmap). That is, given an (ascii) character, I
need to get a bit(pix)map representing that character so I can manipulate
it pixel by pixel.

It seems there are several ways of doing almost that but none to do
exactly what I need.

If someone could come up with code, pseudo-code or a pointer to 
documentation where this is explained I would be very grateful!
