two buttons help

Can anyone point me in the right direction with the following:

The effect I was to create (even if this is nothing like the actual
technical solution used) is two equal sized buttons in a hbox with no
border.  Easy so far, but I want a label (or possibly in future a pixmap)
to be centred across both buttons.

I don't know how to achieve this.
