fork only forking out problems..

i want the parent process to modify the contents of a
text widget that is created (including the main
window) before the fork()!
in the child process i am execing 'telnet` but the
error is get is 
Gdk-ERROR BadID 

i am actually trying to code a terminal emulator using
gtk+ ... also if anyone knows of any such
implementation kindly bring it to my notice ...
