gdkpixmap and use of gtk_widget_show()

HI

I keep running into this 'feature' that when using
a gdkpixmap I have to call the gtk_widget_show()
of its parent before I do anyting with the pixmap,
otherwise it won't be drawn. 
But shouldn't the parent be hidden until all widgets
inside it have been drawn? Is there a way to get around
this?
