Sorry about that can't understand why you are getting multiple messages. How
strange.
D'you know if it is in fact possible to change the bg of a list item within
a GtkList. I would really like to do it because I am using it to display
alarms and I would really like it to display critical alarms in red. I kinda
got it working but it only stays red for a millisecond.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh, I didnt knew that you are using a GtkList... :)
this example I gave you is working fine with GtkCList with gtk 1.2.10
