Tearoff menu

Hi,
Does anyone out there have an example of creating a tearoff menu?
I tried
toolbar_dir_submenus = gtk_tearoff_menu_item_new ();
instead of
toolbar_dir_submenus = gtk_menu_new
But it didn't quite take (which I'm sure is my fault).
