Icon browsing widget

Here's what I want to do:

Offer the user a window similar to an icon-based file manager in large
icon mode (like the Windows 3.x program manager).  I want to offer the
user the ability to click some of those buttons and have the window
change (like a folder in a file manager) or simply select the item (for
acting on it -- drag'n'drop or menu-based commands).  What widget best
suits this?   I'm hoping to avoid re-inventing an oft-created wheel.
