As much as practical, avoid "istallation". Link statically,
give the user a choice of the directory in which is the
program files are written, suggest a location outside of the
"standard" OS file system hierarchy. Keep it as simple as
possible.
The concept of "installed" application is what is making
the system so brittle and hard (if not impossible) for an
average, non-technical user to administer. Remember,
the concept of "installing" an application was invented
by Microsoft. Well designed application should be as
independent of the operating system as possible.
