RE: theory of lib*.a



Here's a quick and dirty answer.

.a files are for static linking while .so files are for shared linking.  (I
think that's right)

Unless you absolutly know what each file in /lib is, leave it alone.  I've
had reinstall my machine a few times until I figured that one out.  If you
are fimilar with windows, it's kinda like saying don't touch your
c:\windows\system32 directory...  <G>

Which is the difference between a lib*.a and lib*.so???
For example i have a library of about 13 MB!! that is of the *.a kind.
The same library with the *.so extension is about 1.5 MB....why???
Is there any risk if i delete all the lib*.a files from /usr/lib to save
space in my HDD??
