I would suggest a textbook sort of thing for learning C, rather than
K&R; K&R assumes a lot of background. "On to C" by Winston for example
might be useful.

For the Linux environment, I think "Beginning Linux Programming" from
Wrox Press is pretty good for getting started, and covers a wide range
of stuff.
