gtk 1.3.2 does not display

programs linked to gtk 1.3.2 do not display anything. no window at all,
just that development warning:
Gtk-Message: YOU ARE USING THE DEVEL BRANCH 1.3.x OF GTK+ WHICH IS
CURRENTLY
                UNDER HEAVY DEVELOPMENT AND FREQUENTLY INTRODUCES
INSTABILITIES.
                if you don't know why you are getting this, you probably

                use the stable branch which can be retrived from
                ftp://ftp.gtk.org/pub/gtk/v1.2/ or via CVS with
                cvs checkout -r glib-1-2 glib; cvs checkout -r gtk-1-2
gtk+

i'm running XFree86 4.0.1 with glib 1.3.2 and pango 0.13. this used to
work with the same setup under suse 6.3, but now i have slackware 7.1.

does anyone know where i can start debugging this? the glib tests work,
so i don't think that the problem is there.

i need to get this working for widget development. i'm working on my own
widget plus someone else's. the most up to date version of the second
widget is for gtk 1.3.2.
