catching signals

Im having trouble catching button clicks on a GtkWidget.  It's packed into
a GtkScrolledWindow widget which is packed into a Vbox widget.

I think I must 'turn on' the signal catching in the containers, but dont
recall know how and I am having trouble finding it in the API reference.
