compiling for alpha

whenever I try to compile one of the example programs in gtk
for an alpha I get:

ld.so.1: ./gmap: fatal: libgtk-1.2.so.0: open failed: No such file or 
directory
Killed

why? doesn't  the 
gtk-config --libs --cflags

take care of including the libraries (whereever they happen to be)?
