radio buttons with item factory

Can anybody give me pointers/examples as to where I can
find info on setting up radio buttons as a menu item with
item factory? It seems that I can declare it via

 { "/Map Types/Standard Map", "<Ctrl>1", chose_map, 1, "<RadioItem>"}, 

but there's no mention on how to initialize it or update it...
