drawing grayscale image in GDK

Hi, I'm a beginner of GTK+ and GDK.
Does GDK support drawing a grayscale image which has 256*256 scales of
gray value(that is,every pixel consists of two bytes)? If it does, which
functions can do it?
Can gdk_draw_gray_image do it?
