For scalable fonts, you can ask the font server to rotate them for
you.  You supply the parameters of an afine transform in place of the
size in the font specification string, and let the font server do the
rest.  Unfortunately, the syntax is a bit non-obvious, and I don't
remember off-hand where to look it up.  Also, once you have the
rotated glyphs, you still have to place them individually in their
proper locations.
