I think it can be done without a new parameter.

When invoked metadata() with a media, it is expected that the callback
is invoked with the same media updated. If media was already up-to-date,
the media in the callback will remain unchanged.

We can use a NULL media to state that the operation was cancelled, and
thus there is no media to update.
