It works just as well. I would slightly favour the explicit PGK_PROG_PKG_CONFIG because it makes the configure script not depend on a specific ordering of the macros, but then it also make sense to check for the core dependencies before the vala ones and some people are happy with less stuff in their configure.ac. Really they are mostly equivalent, either patch should fix the issue :p
