I forgot to mention that, if we go with this feature, I'd like to
propose that for those functions that provide both synchronous and
asynchronous versions, instead of having metadata() and metadata_sync(),
do the other way around: using metadata() for the sync version, and
metadata_async() for the asynchronous version.
Rationale comes because this is the way in which is done in glib.
