I'm not sure what to do with the new code yet. It does remove a lot of
stuff so some people may not like it.

I'm thinking of just using the port of the old code to GTK+ 3 for
GooCanvas 2, and then doing a GooCanvas 3 some time later. So noone is
forced to switch. (I think that was actually your idea!)
