You maybe interested in my version of Damon's svg item:
http://git.gnome.org/browse/gcompris/tree/src/goocanvas/src/goocanvassvg.c?h=gcomprixogoo


It supports autocrop and svg ids. This way I can have a single svg file
with all of GCompris skin items and display them just using the svg id
of an image.
