svn revision 27 installation problems...

Hi,
I tried to install the svn version of goocanvas (revision 27) and got
some problems:
there is no ./configure in the trunc/ folder
running autoconf I got:
configure.in:7: error: possibly undefined macro: AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE
      If this token and others are legitimate, please use m4_pattern_allow.
      See the Autoconf documentation.
configure.in:22: error: possibly undefined macro: AM_MAINTAINER_MODE
configure.in:27: error: possibly undefined macro: AM_PROG_LIBTOOL
configure.in:40: error: possibly undefined macro: AM_GLIB_GNU_GETTEXT
configure.in:74: error: possibly undefined macro: AM_CONDITIONAL

I tried to use m4_pattern_allow (I'm not sure I did it properly) and
./configure was created, but running make resulted in:
./configure: line 3930: syntax error near unexpected token `PACKAGE,'
./configure: line 3930: `PKG_CHECK_MODULES(PACKAGE, $pkg_modules)'

how should I install it?
