What machine are you using? The desktop using the JOSM style
(can be selected from menu->map->style) should display icons
on every machine but the n810.

I also took a look at the scaling code in goocanvas and found that
there'S basically no image specific scaling code and that scaling
is just forwarded to the graphic layers below. So i don't have a clue
where i could even start looking into this.
