First of all, you have a truly ancient version of Gnumeric.

To avoid interpretation of your input, either format the cell as text
*before* you enter values in it, or precede the text by a single quote.

You didn't mention what file format you were using.  That might
have an effect on whether we are able to round-trip this information.
gnumeric and xls ought to work.
