Solution to Paste Special from one gnumeric document to another

You may all know this well-kept secret but I just found this out, and I think
it's worth sharing: I've been using gnumeric for years, but sometimes I
complain that I can't 'paste as value' from one workbook to another. I've
been working around this by pasting as value into a blank sheet in the same
document, then doing a normal paste into the other document.
It turns out that that's because I tend to open documents by double clicking
on the file icon. If on the other hand you open the second document from
File -> Open, you can indeed paste special as expected. I discovered this
while reading a bug report below.
