Asynchronous Operations

I was looking through the plugins and kind of get how things work (at the C level). I tried browsing and googling on how to implement asynchronous operations.

The classic example is my need to price options with live prices being fed into gnumeric. Thus I would like to write a plugin that access a specific messaging system and could receive asynchronous messages.
