As someone working with R (www.r-project.org) as well as trying to
figure out how to get Windows builds for Gnumeric up to date, I'm
inclined to think that it would be better to
- shrink Gnumeric as far as possible,
- make it more easily portable across platforms, yet
- add "hooks" to allow very easy use of capable existing systems e.g., R
and Octave and ... (name some others).
There is already work by Thomas Baier and Eric Neuwirth (R-Gnumeric),
but -- according to what they said to me at UseR in Dortmund in August
2008 -- they are holding off activity until the Win-build is better
established. R-Excel and R-OpenOffice seem to be up and running.
