Gnumeric doesn't recognize dates?

Hi all
When I type 9/7/2004 or 9/7/04 or 04/7/9 (etc... and the same if I use -
instead of /) in a cell, Gnumeric (build 1.7.10 for Windows) assumes it
is text.
Should I submit this as a bug?
