If the file is not confidential, file a bug a bugzilla.gnome.org and attach it.
If it is, file a bug with as much information as you can release.
To recover, try something like...
gunzip <race_cars.gnumeric >race_cars.xml
...and load if with your favourite editor.
You also ought to tell us what Gnumeric version you are using.
