Your fix seems to be to strdup the old locale. IMHO, replacing the 2nd
setlocale call by a

 setlocale (LC_ALL, "");

should have been enough. According to man 3 setlocale, this ensures that
"each part of the locale (...) is set according to the environment
variables".
