So why is this disabled on export?  That seems bad.  Actually
only my conditional sumif() countif() eqns were affected.  I
never went and edited that option, and everything works.

 I got it working. The automatic calculation was turned off, when the 
*.xls,
made by Gnumeric, was opened in Microsoft Excel. In Excel's
Options->Calculation tab click on the Automatic radio button, in the
calculation window.
