How to check prereq versions

Hi,

The download pages lists the required versions of libraries for 
gnumeric:
  http://www.gnome.org/projects/gnumeric/download.shtml


How would I check the versions of libraries like glib, gal, etc.?

I'm guessing it's some kind of command such as:
> foobar -v /usr/lib/glib

But I don't know what "foobar" is and actually /usr/lib/glib is a 
directory containing include/, not a binary.
