Permissions appear to be fine, as I have no problem reading them as a
normal user, and running gnumeric as "root" gives the same errors.

It appears to be linked against libxml1:

[john starfleet john]$ ldd -v /usr/local/bin/gnumeric|grep -i xml
        libxml.so.1 => /usr/local/lib/libxml.so.1 (0x007ff000)
        /usr/local/lib/libxml.so.1:

[john starfleet john]$ ls -l /usr/local/lib/libxml.so.1
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root           16 Sep 19 21:01
/usr/local/lib/libxml.so.1 -> libxml.so.1.8.16
[john starfleet john]$ ls -l /usr/local/lib/libxml.so.1.8.16

/usr/local/lib/libxml.so.1.8.16

Any other ideas?
