FYI, another reason to save uncompressed is for version control. CVS is 
a lot happier to deal with text files.

Howver, as Daniel points out I find it very difficult to believe
that it makes such a difference.  Something else is at work.
Please try using the experimental xml_sax importer to see if that
helps.
