It is possible to start gnumeric via oaf and there is a corba
interface for changing things.  However, it has suffered from a fair
amount of bit rot.  We are intentionally not working on the
scripting until after 1.0 so that there is enough time to decide on
a good api.  Try it, but don't expect it to work as well as the rest
of Gnumeric.
