Configure problem

When I run configure I get an error that reads:
"configure: ls -t appears to fail. Check to is if there is a broken alias
..."

I did an "ls -t configure conftestfile" by hand and it worked.   The problem
appears to be with the $srcdir variable.
any thoughts?
