Hmm, you are not the only one with this problem.
Lets peel the onion one more layer.  Check the results of running
    gnome-config --libs unicode
That will probably fail.  Then you need to double check the prefix
that you installed libunicode and the prefix you installed
gnome-libs.  Also check that you do not have multiple copies of
gnome-config.
