gnumeric 5.6 compile fail

I am unable to compile gnumeric-5.6
using latest source versions of gnome as given in
www.gnome.org/start/installing 

I tried to compile an earlier version (0.35) and got similar errors - so
it must be me doing something wrong.  Suggestions please :-(
