I've tried to get snd_usb_audio compiled with 2.6.12.
mysteriously, the module is not available in /lib/modules/2.6.12-deb
although I've selected it...
/usr/src/linux-source-2.6.12$ grep SND_USB_AUDIO .config
CONFIG_SND_USB_AUDIO=m

I've located the modules in the kernel source tree.
$ ls /usr/src/linux-source-2.6.12/sound/usb/*.ko
snd-usb-audio.ko  snd-usb-lib.ko
and I've tried to force them with insmod -f
but it failed.

now, I think I'll wait for a kernel upgrade.
