Hi Damien, thanks for your reply.

It seems I can't record using arecord. (no errors, but the resulting file is nothing but silence)
I was able to use aplay to play an audio file correctly, though. Does
this indicate that the problem lies with my mixer settings? Skype
(which uses OSS) is able to use my mic correctly, so wouldn't that
indicate that my mixer settings are okay? (since OSS is being emulated
through ALSA)

Sorry, I don't know too much about ALSA and can't be entirely sure that
my mixer settings and recording sources are correct. What should I be
looking for or trying?
