heh, randomly managed to fix it. tried to install the
cvs packages from here
http://snapshots.seconix.com/debian/dists/unstable/main/binary-i386/
(only 1-2 installed, the rest had dependency issues).
then did an apt-get dist-upgrade. it moaned about a
gconf key so i added it manually (int value 55, as it
was before), switched to v4l instead of v4l2 and it
worked o.O But not for root user.
(maybe all i had to do was to use v4l but i think i
had tried that)

...i'm sure that made no sense but i didn't understand
it either :)
