Yes, that is a bug in howl. It should silently fail :-/

When clicking on the X, GM is hidden. You can make it reappear by
clicking on the icon in the KDE systray, or gnome notification area, or
whatever it is called on your system and DE. You have to properly quit
to make it exit.
