Ah, I had the same situation. Turned out my https handler was some
program that I didn't have (while http was properly set).
Casnyi, just run gconf-editor, find
/desktop/gnome/url-handlers/https/command and set it to whatever your
browser is. In my case I put "firefox %s", which was the value of
/desktop/gnome/url-handlers/http/command
