My personal preference is an UI that's as minimal as possible. Ideally,
I'd like to use GM in the following way:
- I open my Gossip buddy list, or use the contact-lookup-applet, or any
other means to find a person.
- I choose to call the person in question, at which point some
notifications about the progress of the call appear in a non-obtrusive
way (By this I mean non-modal notifications without actually showing
GM's main UI, for instance like:
http://nat.org/2004/september/gnome-notification-timeout-colorshade-anim.gif )
- if the other side has video support, it displays it in a separate
window, always on top.
- only if I need to tweak settings/use the dialpad would I want to open
GM's main UI.

So in short, I'd love GM to be as invisible as possible, unless I need
to tweak audio/video support, want to see statistics, troubleshoot the
conection etc. I guess this fits with your possibility 1).
