well, how about the most natural solution "look around the classroom"?

if that's too basic for your problem, then i guess you need an ILS
server.. there has not been an official release, but you should find its
code (the adapted NDK patch for openldap) in this lists' archive. (but
you could just use ils.seconix.com and ask users to register with the
email domain of your school which you then just have to search with the
GM addressbook)
