[GnomeMeeting-list] Update on GM snapshots w.r.t artsd

Sorry, I lost the thread, so I had to start a new one...

Last week I was asked if GM from a CVS snapshot was better behaved when
artsd was running (so /dev/dsp was busy), as the 0.98.5 version I had
was locking up at startup and leaving my camera busy forcing me to
reboot...

Yes it (20040125-1 on mdk) works much better, reporting that the device
is busy and enabling me to shut down GM cleanly and freeing up the
camera. In ALSA mode, it tells me exactly which card it is using (by
type name "Ensoniq" - not /dev/dsp; same for the webcam - "Phillips
ToUoCam..." not /dev/video0). This is a really nice touch and adds a
good bit of polish.

The only shame of it is that XMMS in ALSA mode works with my card even
when artsd is running as my card has two PCM outputs and XMMS
automagically skips to the second. I'm guessing, but this might be
because my card has only has one PCM input - paired with the first
device, so maybe GM is forced to the same device as artsd has already
claimed. Maybe I can force artsd to the second output, leaving the first
free for GM.

<rant> I _really_ wish that the Linux sound servers would consolidate on
one standard so sound I/O could be shared by all applications. I don't
know about gnome (esd?), but I don't fancy arts as a good output plugin
for GM due to the latency it adds to the sound stream. </rant>

Thanks,
Nick.
