Make sure no other program is using it: things like artsd for example
should be shutdown.

I guess your microphone is simply muted. You have 2 solutions :
- play with the mixer until it works, don't forget to enable recording
for the microphone
- modprobe snd-usb-audio (don't remember the exact name) to activate
recording from the webcam microphone).
