well, snd_intel8x0 is your module for i810 audio in fact. If this
doesn't get loaded, that's a KNOPPIX problem you should ask on their
ML.. (but i can confirm i have seen this problem with some KNOPPIX
version already)

yep.. as long as there's the i810_audio, ALSA won't start.. and as soon
as you see snd_intel8x0 in lsmod, you have native ALSA.. that's about as
easy as it is.

No idea where you have that option from, but afaik there is no such
option. It was never planned to run GM without sound.

Well, don't be expecting miracles. GM is still miles away from what
could technically be achieved (like hollywood movie style) with
h263/h264 and super-duper-commercial audio-codecs. But for an OpenSource
software, we're doing pretty well and have just to recommend not using
video over 64k-ISDN and below for now. (that may be different with GM
1.2, we'll see)
